Online Resources Included with Enrollment
Brevard Virtual eSchool (BVES) employs the latest tools in online instruction. Each student has access to the Calvert Learning Portal, an online student portal for access to instructional support and resources that are designed to enhance and reinforce learning, such as online lesson manuals, tutorials, and supplemental game-based activities.
In addition to live online classes, students have access to the following resources:
The Calvert i-Library
The Calvert i-Library contains interactive resources, tools, and supplemental activities designed to enhance your offline instructional time. Among these resources are educational website reviews, age-appropriate activities, an astronomy portal, and online versions of core reference materials, including:
- Encyclopedia Britannica
- World Atlas
- Merriam-Webster Dictionary
- Collegiate Thesaurus
- Multimedia Library
Computer Skills and Applications
BVES integrates Computer Skills and Applications lessons into our curriculum. The Computer Skills lessons guide you and your student through interactive online lessons.
Students learn word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation skills using interactive lessons. These skills are then practiced through assignments in other subject areas. We have integrated the instruction so that your student does not learn skills in isolation but develops an appreciation of how to apply and expand the new skills.
In addition to the live, interactive classes, students have access to pre-recorded lectures in various subjects. These lectures, delivered by the BVES Educational Support Team, reinforce instruction and allow for greater pacing flexibility.
Supplemental Online Math Instruction
Brevard Virtual makes learning math fun with Aha!Math. These web-delivered supplemental math activities supports your student’s core math instruction. It uses multisensory, game-based activities to improve learning. Because the activities are fun, they motivate students to extend their time in math practice.
The Aha!Math content is available in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Virtual characters encourage students with multiple levels of feedback and instructional support. Using research-based instructional models and content, this tool improves foundational math skills and extends students’ knowledge while developing problem-solving and reasoning skills.
Online Threaded Discussions
Education Specialists use different types of technology to engage students in group projects and peer review. One frequently used tool is threaded discussions. In this example, students are asked by an Education Specialist to comment on the word play in The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, which is featured in Calvert’s Sixth Grade curriculum.
Discovery Education Streaming Video
Calvert presents concept-specific videos from Discovery Education STREAMING that will engage students and help bring lessons alive. Parents will enjoy watching as their student makes the connection between the lesson taught and the world around us.
Discovery Education STREAMING engages students with an extensive library of videos featuring exclusive titles from the Discovery Channel. A leader in digital video-based learning, Discovery Education produces high-quality digital resources that are scientifically proven and standards based. An extensive streaming video library offers incredible resources in all major core subject areas, such as history that includes live re-enactments. The videos are vivid, enlightening and comprehensive.
These videos are available for students in Kindergarten through Eighth Grades and are aligned to lessons throughout the Calvert curriculum. The videos can be accessed through a link in the online lesson manual.
Numerous studies over the years have shown that interactive multimedia learning takes less time, is enjoyed more, and increases learning. Calvert is pleased to introduce Interactive Online Activities featuring BrainPOP.
These engaging, online activities support the core curriculum and will help ignite your child’s learning. BrainPOP is a multi-sensory experience designed to improve learning and includes animated video tutorials, interactive activities, and assessments. These research-based activities were developed in accordance with national and state academic standards.
